“GALWAY”, group show. Friday 15 March – Thursday 11 April. KENNY GALLERY, GALWAY ‘I met a man once at an exhibition opening in Spiddal, and when I remarked to him how wonderful it was that artists had different ideas, different vision, different taste, he said “It’s a bloody good job, sure if they all had the same taste, they would all be running after my wife!” Witty words, wise words. So, we decided to ask these different tastes and different visions what did Galway mean to them; is there any aspect of the rich tapestry that is life in Galway that has particular meaning for them; what makes the city unique and memorable ?How would you depict it ? The result is a multi-media potpourri of images of how Galway is perceived by some 30 different artists, some native to the place, others who visit. Some see it as the City of the Tribes, others as the City of the Vibes. One would expect the swans at the Claddagh to appeal to artists, or Galway hookers…but walking the prom ! There are many surprises in these impressions of buildings, streets, festivals, and people.Together, they make a sort of composite portrait of the city. Some old friends are represented here, and happily, there are also many new faces.’

*** “MICHAEL DOWNES”, new paintings. Friday 12 April – Thursday 9 May. KENNY GALLERY, GALWAY Michael Downes came to art late in his career. Having graduated from University College Cork, he went to work in the commercial world but painting was always his first love, and eventually he decided to give up his business career and dedicate himself to being a full time artist. This set him off on a journey as he began to explore his native county first, and later the west coast of Ireland in search of inspiration. It is no surprise then that the landscape should feature extensively in his work. He revels in the challenges imposed by the ever changing lights and colours of the countryside. His keen sense of observation allows him to capture the magic of moving light on the landscape. He occasionally likes to zoom into his subject and explore the layers of colour and movement in wild hedgerows and gardensMichael uses a variety of media, watercolours, pen and inks, oils and acrylics and is constantly experimenting with textures and searching for new ideas and compositions. Michael, who is represented in public and private collections, is a director of Cork’s Crawford Gallery. This is his first solo exhibition in Kennys.

*** “VIBRANT SYNCHRONIES ~ FRAN McCANN et al”, Group exhibiton. Friday 10 May – Thursday 10 June. KENNY GALLERY, GALWAY In association with Trevisian International Art. An international from the four corners of the world including the work of our own Fran McCann along with , Adam Balogh (HUN), Ton Lindhout (GER), Keith Morant (NZ), Inger Dillan (NOR) and others. Trevisan International Art is a selection of fine artists which, since 2003, have been especially selected to exhibit their work at the Estense Castle in Ferrara, and other venues throughout Italy. It is their aim to provide a strong interactive network for these artists where a ‘meeting of minds’ may communicate from many different countries and cultures. Under the guidance and curatorial skills of Paola Trevisan these artists will enjoy a valuable source of International communication as well as a strong launching pad for global promotion. The strength in this venture lies in the diversity of character, sensibility and talent in the differing individualities of the artists. Through the variations inherent to their language and cultural backgrounds, they will enlarge their awareness of art on an International level and enrich their understanding of its purpose.

KENNETH WEBB - TIMELESS SOLO EXHIBITION, THE KENNY GALLERY 12th July - 8th August, 2013 Kenneth Webb walked into Kennys in High Street for the first time in 1953, and they have been working together ever since. It has been a very happy working relationship built on mutual trust and great friendship. In the sixty years since, his work has come in different phases. He gets locked on to and explores a particular subject, and when he is finished with it, he moves effortlessly on to a new theme. Art lovers have experienced his Forest of Dean pictures, his County Down farmhouses and harbours, thorn trees, tidewrack, the poppies of the 1960’s, bog paintings, the waterlilies of 80’s and 90’s and his recent images of his unique garden and the Marconi Bog. What has not changed in all those years is his passion for painting and his use of colour. Colour for him is an all embracing experience which pervades his work, and he constantly experiments with his own freer ideas and personal concepts, using direct colour in a subjective expressionist manner. An exhibition of his paintings celebrating those sixty years will open in the Kenny Gallery in the Liosbán Estate on Friday, July 12th, 2013 at 6.00pm. It comprises mostly new work but there is a retrospective element included. The guest speaker will be Kathleen Villiers-Tuthill. For further information please click here.
