The initial inspiration for this show emerged from an environment that has intrigued John since his early childhood, the sea-shore. That ever-changing interface between land and sea, a zone of reflections. On the shore one rarely sees an object be it bird, cloud or stone without its reflection being somewhere in your field of vision. This then produces a new, often distorted dichotomous image of the object.
In many ways John feels that this is analogous with the way we view objects. Not only is the object seen by the eye but as the image enters our unconscious, it evokes associated images that are modulated by our emotions and our experiences of the forms and lines within that object.
So John's aim is to create new sculptural forms whose shape is inspired by both the concrete visual image of found objects, many from the sea-shore, and the product of the minds "free floating" reflection upon them.
This exhibition is dedicated to the memory of Colm Conneely.
