Vernon Carter

Vernon Carter

Vernon Carter's feel for material is as varied and textured as nature itself. Carter's chief preoccupation is with life - creation, the universe, the vastness of it all and man's almost insignificant presence in its midst. He sees man as very much one with nature. With that in mind it seems reasonable that his figures should be created from natural forms. His unusual mud and sand reliefs again make human forms inseperable from those of nature by forming them as the trunks and branches of trees. His organic sculptures are viewer friendly. They are also malleable, but while the material is uncompromising it speaks of external and inevitable human compromise.

His first solo exhibition was in Dublin in 1976, and he has had many since. He has several important public sculptures in Belfast.
